At the end of every year I spend a large amount of time planning my intentions for the upcoming new year. This year a full page was filled out all broken into categories like personal, art, running, and others. Here are a few of the art specific goals.. a bit late of the new year but close enough.
create & think regularly - I haven't spent nearly enough time simply thinking or creating art. I want to focus on just making things, regardless if I have some grand idea or anything.
publish a finished body of work and be working on other projects - While I want to create more work without the weight of having a large project, I do have goals to complete one body of work that truly feels finished, and to be working on others by the end of the year.
consistently show work to mentors more and keep / grow mentor relationships - networking is everything, I have a lot of amazing mentors and friends but they probably all think I have given up the art game.. I'd like to show them otherwise and not keep all my work to myself. I've got a lot to learn from my mentors.
be published in at least one outdoor magazine (commercial work) - New for me is seeing a semi-future in commercial photography. As I pursue a career in the outdoor industry on top of an art career, I see the potential to combine the two into a commercial side hustle. I'd like to try this out and have something to show for it.
submit works to open call exhibitions and publications - No set number or anything, I just want to spend more time and energy into finding these opportunities and submitting to as many as I can. My CV is lacking and I could use some additional lines on it along with the experience of showing more.
release 2 different sound pieces on any inspiring label or comp - I've been making and releasing sounds for some time, but I haven't had any major success or wide reach due to my self-sufficiency. I hope to release sounds on labels that can alleviate some of the logistic stress as well as allow more people to come across it. Being included in the catalog of some of my favorite labels alongside some of my favorite artists would be incredible.
create one installation - While I want to strengthen my image and sonic skillsets, I hope to include new mediums to my process as well. I feel installation can really add to my already existing works and enhance new projects. Here's to trying it out.
keep up on artists, publishers and spaces more (stay on top of scheduling research time) - The more you know, the better you are. I want to read more, be more aware of artists old and new, and become more familiar with the ever growing list of publishers and spaces. With this comes scheduling time to suss it all out.
attend more talks, openings, and shows - Similar to keeping up on artists, I want to be more a part of a physical art community and see more with my own eyes away from the computer. While living in NY I have so much right at my fingertips that I need to take advantage of.
be always reading a book as well as have one to listen to - Similar to the two goals directly above, I want to be more diligent with my reading and spend more of my downtime stimulating my brain still.. more goals related to that are under my personal category.
continue to blog regularly - With all of these experiences and knowledge acquired, I expect to use the blog to share with others as well as have a place to distill and remember my expanding list of information.
start functioning / thinking as a business - While this may feel premature, I feel it is best to start these habits in advance because once the ball starts rolling, it may not slow enough for one to get a grip on all of the logistics, technicalities, and legalities of functioning as a working artist.
find ways to empower or aid others in their artistic endeavors - A career in the arts can be seen as pretty self-indulging.. and rightfully so. I'd like to find ways to balance the "selfishness" that can occur when also attempting to focus more on myself and my art making.
Here's to 2018, hopefully this is a better year than last. I feel it will be.
